Welcome August!

I can’t believe we are in this month already…time really does fly! It seems like we arrived in Berlin yesterday…but it’s been almost 7 months! 😮  There is so much more to discover in this amazing city, one year just isn’t enough.

Since it’s summer and this week here in Berlin is promising to be hot, I decided to post about a really cool lake that we went last month. Summer here is really different from the one I am used to in Brazil…of course! As a tropical country it’s more hot than cold, and in São Paulo (where I lived) you can count on your fingers the days that are really cold in the winter. The same happens here in Berlin, but in the exact opposite, you can count the days that exceed 30ºC in the summer…hahahaha Those are the days that you enjoy by going at lakes and public pools (there are a lot of public pools in Berlin).

Summer Peach Galette

IMG_6411

If there is one thing I can’t enough of is stone-fruits, I love peaches, nectarines, apricots, plums and cherries. These fruits here in Berlin are really cheap in the summer, you can find packages of 1kg for €0.99 or less, and they are really tasty and delicious! This is very different in Brazil, these fruits can be very expensive and not that tasty, but the same can happen here with tropical fruits.

It has been a little while that I wanted to bake a peach pie, but since our kitchen here is not fully equipped, I needed a recipe that didn’t involve a baking pan, blender or mixer. So I went to look online and came across this recipe, which was easy to bake. I felt so happy while I was making it, I really enjoy making the dough from scratch and work with fresh ingredients, a good playlist also helps to set a good mood 🙂

After 5 months of intensive Deutsch class, summer vacation is finally here!

Since we don’t have much money to travel around Europe, we are going to spend the summer here in Berlin. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not complaining at all about this, on the opposite, I am very happy 😀 There are so many cheap or free things you can do in this city, it’s amazing! If there is one thing I love to do on a hot lazy afternoon, is to chill out at a park or garden or any type of green area, and Berlin is full of them!

We had so much fun on the weekend here in Berlin, actually it was a long weekend, yesterday was also a holiday here due to Pentecost. My Mini Diana

IMG_1044

A couple of years ago, Rafael gave me a Lomo camera, Mini Diana. I was thrilled! It had been years since I took a photo with an analogical camera. It came with three 35 mm film, one black and white and two coloured (normal and chrome). The first time that I used the camera, I mixed the films….I thought that I was using a coloured one, but instead, it was the black and white. Until today, I still don’t know how I did that, because the type is written on the film….a little bummer, but still I had some nice pictures at the end, but I have to confess that some of them are black as the night! hehehehehe

1st of May

IMG_1024

Here’s a little bit of what we did yesterday here in Berlin! The 1st of May here is a really big deal! We went to Kreuzberg, a fantastic neighbourhood here in Berlin, with our Italian friend Maurizio. There was this huge open party in the street, with different types of music and food in every corner. We arrived there around one o’clock in the afternoon, and there was already many people there, so we walked around the streets, ate something here and there, and of course appreciated the sun when he wasn’t hiding behind the clouds…ˆˆ

Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church

IMG_5781

I am so happy that the weather is getting warmer around here! The grass is greener, trees have new blossoms, new animals are arriving….don’t you just love the rebirth of nature?! Everything is wonderful!!

With all of that going on, you have no reason to stay at home, just walking around in this amazing city in the sun makes me so happy! There’s always something new to discover. We went for a walk in the lovely Charlottenburg’s neighbourhood, home of countless stores, the Zoo, theatres, museums and the Protestant Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church. It’s almost impossible to not be drawn to the church, you’re walking down the street and suddenly you see this church that is almost entirely destroyed. Now, if you are curious like me, you want to go there and discover about its history. The minute you enter the hall, you see beautiful mosaics all around and can imagine how beautiful is was before being destroyed.

Museum für Naturkunde

I don’t know if I’ve already told that I have a major in Biology, and during my college time I used to work at a NGO that was specialised in the conservation of neotropical wild cats and also had a rehabilitation center for other wild animals. By that, I don’t even have to say what a huge sucker am I for animals….I LOVE them!

Vogelsang – The Lost City

IMG_5480

Berlin and its surrounding have some places that are hidden and forgotten. Since so many things have happened around here since the war, they can be quite a historical treasure. We weren’t familiarised with them since a couple of weeks back…we met an Italian guy, Maurizio, at our German language class and he invited us to go with him and his other Italian friend, who is a Historian, to go visit the lost city of Vogelsang. I’ve never in my life been to places like these, and I was a little afraid of what I could run into there…but gladly it all went well and became a super interesting trip!
