Escape the city: Britzer Garten

Happy August! Can’t believe we are already here, on the eight month of the year, and look at me, writing two posts this week…wow! hahahaha it sure has been a while since I’ve done this, but every time I write a post, I think to myself that I must do this more often and let the laziness behind me. This is a post that I have been wanting to share since the beginning of May, when it was still Spring, and all the flowers were in bloom. Maybe I have not mentioned this before, but one of the things that I most love in life is being surrounded by nature. When I’m among nature, I feel this happiness inside me, I cannot stop smiling and being amused with what this planet offer us everyday. As you know, I have a Bachelor degree in Biology, but back in the day during university, I abominated my botanical classes, I used to think they were very, very boring. But now, I think I’m a totally different person, now I find myself each day more and more interested in botany…and regret not paying attention to those classes at university…what goes around, comes around, right?! hahaha

Life, lately…

ACS-0028

Hi people! Guess who’s back, back again?! After a two weeks of silence I am back! Not sure for how long….but that’s ok, right?! hahaha I had an interesting couple of weeks, one bad, and the other one really good…livin’ that old yin-yang life. Two weeks ago, Paco (my dog), caught the worst stomach flu ever….seriously, he has been sick before, but never like this…he threw up more than ten times before I took him to the vet. I have never seen him so weak and quiet, and for a hyper energetic dog, that was really scary. He didn’t eat for almost three whole days, he got shots, antibiotics, pills…but thank God, after five days he was his old jumpy, leash pulling little monster again! hahaha He got sick on his birthday, gosh what a present…so I wasn’t able to celebrate the proper way…I always like to take a picture of him on his birthday with those number balloons, almost what people do today to say how months old are their baby…hahaha It’s a nice way to remember him as the years pass by. I took the picture this year after his actual birthday, when he was already feeling well, and I loved the result! The balloon was way much cooler than last year’s, but since he only turned two, I can still get better and better at this! hahaha

Sala da Mangiare

ACS-0014

Hello lovely people, how are you doing? I woke up today kind of tired today…for the past two nights I’ve not been able to sleep so good…so I’m kinda sleepy and lazy, but here I am, writing a post to see if I can shake it all away! On Monday, Rafael and I celebrated 2 years of marriage! Can’t believe how time is going by so quickly…8 years has already passed since we met at a samba bar in Campinas, Brazil…and so much has changed since that! We always like to go out for dinner to celebrate and talk while eating (so much eating, as always…hahahha). But this year, I also wanted to do something else, there is a jazz bar one block away from us called Sowieso. It’s been quite a while since I wanted to go there and see some live jazz music, so I said to myself this was a perfect situation! Rafael was having doubts about this place since forever, but I said let’s go and check it out, it may be nice! Guys, I’ve never ever been so wrong in my life! Last Friday was a mix of Portuguese/Berliner jazz, and I thought it would be fun….I swear…we lasted maybe 30 minutes there after the band started playing, it was like I was in my worst nightmare, or if I dare say, purgatory’s soundtrack! I am not kidding! I left the bar so mad, that I started crying in the street. I know…a bit dramatic, maybe? hahaha This has never happened to me before…Now, I may not be a musician, and I don’t understand a lot about music, but I do admire a good melody and arrangement in a song. But when six people start playing their instruments totally uncoordinated (at least that was what it seemed to us) 5 feet away from you, making a lot of weird noises (and faces…haha)…the only alternative we had was to bolt! If there had been an indication on the program that had said, experimental jazz music, I would have never gone to see the band. I know that a lot of people must enjoy these kind of performances (apparently the whole bar was in a trance, even the 70 year old lady sitting next to me was very focused on the band), but this is not our style. What really got me irritated and sad was the fact that one more place I can cross off my list that I’ll never go to anymore here in Berlin. If it’s not the weird music, it’s the fact that people can smoke in bars here (a thing that I really, really hate…I can’t stand smoke!). Of course I don’t know all Berliner bars, but what I do enjoy here are Irish pubs, especially the one that we went to for NYE, Irish Times….just keep them pint of Guinness coming and I’ll be happy all night! hahahaha

I don’t want to complain anymore, so let’s skip to Saturday night! It’s true when they say, when bad things happen, good things come…and this time it came really fast, the next day, at Sala da Mangiare! haha an Italian restaurant also close to our apartment, I have passed by it a couple of times during the day (when they are closed), and after reading about it on the Oooh, Berlin! guide winter edition, I decided it was time to make a reservation…I sent an e-mail (because I don’t like talking on the phone…haha) requesting a table for two, Saturday at 8 pm…but they never responded back, so maybe the phone would’ve been more efficient…haha The restaurant opens from Tuesday to Saturday, from 7 pm to 11 pm. We got there maybe around 7:30, and there where already people there, but we still managed to get a table. Like all little restaurants, this one can maybe fit around 30 people, so I think going early is the trick, in case you have not made a reservation.

Autumn in Grunewald

IMG_8680

Happy Friday, y’all!! Can’t believe how fast this week went by, at least for me. So, last Sunday was a wonderful warm sunny day around here, which was pretty shocking to be honest, because it felt like a summer day in the middle of October! haha And if it’s 20 degrees celsius, you just have to make the most of it! That’s why I decided, for the first time, to go to Grunewald 😀 (when I say “I decided” it’s because Rafael will never come up with these kind of ideas, he usually likes to stay home on Sundays and enjoy his resting day. No problem with me, but sometimes I like to get out of the house and do something, and this “something” is usually a thing he doesn’t like very much, so sometimes he tags along, and sometimes not). Rafael tagged along this time, but was not feeling so well due to a cough, or something like that….but we managed to give Paco the time of his life! The main reason I wanted to go there was because of Paco, countless people already told me how fun it is to take your dog there, because of the lake where they can swim. I didn’t know what were my expectations when I left home, but I came home so happy after having such a great day, I really enjoy being in the middle of nature, I love looking at trees and see how tall they are (silly, I know…but hey, that’s me! hahaha).

Golden Berlin – Part II

img_8049

Hello, people!!

Wherever you are, hope you are having a great day!

I was supposed to post this last week, but Rafael got sick and I’ve never made so much chicken soup in my life..hahaha (I’m going to blame it on his sickness instead of my procrastination :s ). Last week got pretty cold here in Berlin, like -3 degrees Celsius, I wish that I could say it snowed as well, but it didn’t 😦 Snow, please come soon! I’m already listening to Christmas playlists on Spotify…haha We are pretty anxious for Christmas this year, because now we can buy Christmas decorations for the apartment, different than last year, because we didn’t know if we where going to stay in Germany or not, but we did, HOORAY!! And I can’t wait to go to the Christmas markets, drink Glühwein and eat local food, and maybe buy some Christmas ornaments for the tree. Things are going to be busy around here next month, we are expecting friends and family, so basically we are saving money to buy some things for the apartment and to enjoy the city when they will be here.

Golden Berlin – Part I

Happy November!!!

I am a little bit skeptic that today is the 1st of November, and that Christmas is already around the corner…2016 you are flying right pass me 😮

One thing that I really love about Berlin is the amount of trees in this city, it’s so green, and now also red, yellow and even gold…

Funkhaus Berlin

IMG_7677

Three Sundays ago, Rafael and I went to an open air event hosted by Bite Club at Funkhaus, as you can see here. We went of course, for the food, and also for the Funkhaus tour. Before that, I had never heard about this place, so I looked it up and found out that is was East Germany’s central radio station, we got pretty curious after that, and couldn’t wait to see it!

Bite Club BBQ

IMG_7741

As I said before, Berlin is full of fun events now in the Summer, it’s hard to choose one…but I usually go to the ones where food is involved…hahaha On Sunday, Bite Club was hosting a barbecue event at Funkhaus Berlin, an old radio broadcasting building from the GDR period. I’m going to write a special post about this amazing building, because there was a tour and Rafa took some amazing pictures of it! The location was a little far from our apartment, and the weather was not as its best…around 20 degrees celsius with a little bit of sun, clouds and windy…but I decided to embrace the “Summer day” and wear shorts! Of course I felt chilly the moment I stepped on the street, but I was trusting on the sun…it did come out a few times, kept me warm while we were sitting besides the Spree river. When we decided to come home, it was already cloudy, and as soon as we got home, it poured, we were lucky!

Around Berlin

Happy Monday, friends!

We had a really nice weekend over here, hope you had a good one as well! We enjoyed the nice weather on Saturday to walk around our neighbourhood and visit a little street market. Berlin in the spring is full of things to do on the weekend, which is tough to choose, but no matter what, you always end up having a good time anywhere.

A Little Bit of Moabit

IMG_7399

Happy Monday, friends!!

We’ve been staying for almost a month now in a friends apartment in the neighbourhood of Moabit here in Berlin. Our apartment was rented until May 15th since we didn’t know when we were coming back. Luckily, our landlord decided to rent it for us again, so we are moving back to Neukölln this weekend. It’s been very interesting to know a “new” neighbourhood, Moabit is much more quiet than Neukölln, more like a family place. Today, everybody wants to live in Neukölln, its become kinda of a hipster neighbourhood, with a lot of young people, bars and countless places to eat. I like to live in Neukölln because Tempelhofer Feld is basically my backyard, but in a near future I wouldn’t mind moving to a calmer place…let’s face it, we are not that young and we don’t party all the time…hahahha
